On weekends, it is impossible to avoid farmers markets in the D.C. area and now farmers markets are even finding their way into the workweek.

In most neighborhoods, you can find many local vendors. Farmers markets are growing in popularity. According to the USDA, in mid-2008, there were 4,685 farmers markets operating in the U.S, a 6.8 percent increase from 4,385 farmers markets in 2006.

Here is a guide to markets that will be open even as fall continues and winter encroaches.

(Note: The first four farmers’ markets on this list are Freshfarm markets, meaning that they are producer-only markets and only sell what they grow. These markets promote locally grown food from the Chesapeake Bay area. There are four locations in the D.C. area and four others in surroundings regions. For more information go to www.freshfarmmarket.org.)
