Week-Long Fete to Mark Placement of Zappa Statue

Frank Zappa's son Dweezil will front a tribute band and his widow will host a symposium in September when a statue of the eccentric late rocker is placed in front of a library in his birthplace, organizers said.

The statue was donated by fans in Lithuania, a country Zappa never visited but one where his music was popular among the avant garde. The statue is a replica of one erected by a fan club in the Lithuanian capital.

Baltimore's public arts commission considered multiple locations, including the bohemian Fells Point waterfront, before deciding on the library in working-class Highlandtown, a neighborhood well known for its many Greek restaurants.

The Southeast Anchor Library also plans an exhibit in conjunction with the Sept. 19 statue dedication, according to producer Sean Brescia.
