Virginia Tax-Free Holiday Coming Up

Help Save The Planet Without Paying Sales Tax

Want to do your part to help save the planet, without paying sales tax? Here's your chance.

Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell announced the fourth annual tax holiday on energy-efficient products on Monday. The holiday is Oct. 8 through Oct. 11.

"Buying energy-efficient appliances is a smart investment, saving consumers money on their utility bills and conserving energy," McDonnell said.

During the holiday, shoppers can save money on heat pumps, dishwashers, washing machines, insulation, toilets and shower heads.

There will be no tax on fluorescent light bulbs, programmable thermostats and faucets, and other energy saving devices.

New and used items must be priced at $2,500 or less and carry the Energy Star logo or WaterSense design.

You can also buy online. All online orders placed during the tax holiday will be exempt from the 5 percent sales tax, provided the sellers have the items available for shipment.

The governor's office said some retailers also may choose to pay the tax on any nonexempt merchandise.

Everyone needs to do their part to use energy more wisely and conserve natural resources, McDonnell said.
