Va. Uses 150th Anniversary of Civil War to Promote Tourism

Yep, there's a App for that

Want to know what's going on in Virginia to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Civil War?

There's a app for that!

A partnership of groups in the Old Dominion is promoting the commonwealth's wineries and other tourist spots, and they've come up with some ways to let you know about what's happening.

The group is creating multimedia information terminals that will be installed at welcome centers, new gateway signs and a battlefield application for the iPhone.

Virginia's Commonwealth Transportation Board just awarded a $3.5 million grant to help fund the project.

Other members of the partnership include VDOT, the Virginia Tourism Corporation, the Virginia Wine Board, the Virginia Sesquicentennial of the American Civil War Commission, Virginia Civil War Trails and the Civil War Preservation Trust.

The National Park Service is also gearing up with special events to mark the anniversary.

The anniversary begins next year and continues through 2015.
