“Virginia is for Lovers” to the Slogan Hall of Fame?

State slogan in for the long haul

The tourism slogan "Virginia is for Lovers" is in the running for top slogan on the Madison Avenue Advertising Walk of Fame. Yes, there really is such a thing.

And it's high time we honored the only state slogan that made us all giggle the first time (OK, the first 12 times) we heard it.

It's certainly better than Delaware's "Small Wonder." How awkward is THAT?

New Jersey: "Come See for Yourself." Uh, don't mind if we don't!

And we've never actually thought of Iowa as Life Changing," even though we do enjoy corn on occassion. Then again, it's no Idaho: "Great Potatoes. Tasty Destinations." Not to mention New Hampshire's version of put-up-or-shut-up, "Live Free or Die."

Pro-"Virginia Is for Lovers" folk can vote for the slogan online. Winners will be inducted in to the Walk of Fame during at the end of September.

The nomination coincides with the 40th anniversary of the slogan, which was launched in 1969. It is America's longest-running
state tourism slogan.

The slogan also was named by Forbes.com as one of the top 10 tourism marketing campaigns of all time.

Officials say Virginia tourism generates $19 billion in revenue, supports 210,000 jobs and provides $1.2 billion in state and local
taxes for Virginia's communities.
