While there was only a sole winner of the $1.537 billion Mega Millions jackpot, three people in D.C. and Virginia are waking up $1 million richer.

Lottery officials say one ticket purchased in South Carolina matched all six numbers in Tuesday night's drawing, but there were 36 second-place winners.

Two $1 million tickets were sold in Virginia. A third was sold in D.C., lottery officials say. It's not clear where those tickets were purchased.

The other $1 million tickets were sold in 16 other states.

The winning numbers were 5, 28, 62, 65, 70 and Mega Ball 5.

Lottery officials initially said massive jackpot had reached $1.6 billion, making it the world's largest lottery grand prize. But on Wednesday, they said the jackpot was $1.537 billion, just short of the record for all lotteries.

Mega Millions is played in 44 states as well as Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
