Take Your Dog to Work Day Is Friday

Forget doggie daycare. If you can brave the potential for chewed-up files and watercooler "accidents," bring your dog to work, at least for a day.

Friday, June 24 is Take Your Dog to Work Day -- a day to promote pet adoption by bringing your beloved pooch to the office.

It sounds fun, if you work at a summer camp or at the zoo, but for the traditional office setting, it could be challenging. There's the distraction of course -- the barking, the rear-end sniffing (by the dogs) and the my-dog-is-better-than-your-dog one-upmanship.

And then there's the concerns about workplace production: You have to walk the dogs at some point and, of course, visit with your next-desk doggie neighbors.

DogCentric, a Bethesda-based dog walking company that helped sponsor last year's event said that it's a "unique opportunity for hard-working dog lovers to bring their well-mannered canine companions to the workplace."

The annual event has become increasingly popular since Pet Sitters International created it in 1999 to address the pet overpopulation issue by supporting animal adoption from rescues and shelters. Plus, organizers said having dogs at work boosts morale and relieves stress. And it's only for one day. Just make sure your company steam cleans the carpets.

But if you can't take your dog to work, take it to the bar. DogCentric hosts a Yappy Hour next Wednesday, June 29 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Tommy Joe's (Bethesda). And Jackson 20 (480 King St., Alexandria) holds a pooch-friendly happy hour every Tuesday and Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. through October.
