The Hour Has Come

It's time to prepare for happy hours at home

The Hour (1015 King St., Alexandria), a boutique specializing in both vintage and modern barware, opened yesterday in Alexandria.

You can find various glassware (flutes, high-balls and tumblers), pitchers, stirrers and napkins to stock your bar at home. Designers include Georges Briard, Fred Press, Culver and Couroc. And while you're at it, you might as well pick out some new or vintage cocktail jewelry, also on display at The Hour.

Owner Victoria Vergason's all about that "classy cocktail era of the 1940s, '50s and '60s." Vintage pieces are blended with modern to create a perfect cocktail (heh) of that classy, classy hour. OK, we've never done a "classy" happy hour before (where's our bucket of Corona already?), but there's a first time for everything.

Vergason opened the shop because she believes that "the cocktail hour is as much about expressing one's style as it is about the drink; that the glass and its presentation are as important as the cocktail itself." It's like she's saying there's something more important than the actual alcohol. Huh!

And while we have no problem drinking our cocktails out of red plastic Solo cups, coffee mugs or even straight from the keg, some nicer (and classier) barware wouldn’t hurt.
