The Dog Wears Prada

Dogs get makeovers for the Bark Ball

It's a shop with styles hot enough for the catwalk -- or in this case, a dog walk. It's the latest in canine couture just in time for the biggest doggie-themed party of the year.

Barkley Square Gourmet Dog Bakery & Boutique is a local one-stop shop to get you and your pooch ready for the Washington Humane Society Bark Ball on June 5.

Owner Kristina Robertson invited us in to take a look at the fashions that will be gracing the dance floor at this year's bash. Jewelry is important, especially real diamonds.

"Now we don't sell that here, but we have some faux diamonds that we will be bringing," Robertson said. "But just like for the women in Vogue, the dogs follow the same policy, so right now it’s the big chunky jewelry and the big rhinestones and stones."

The who's who of dogs will be at this event, and that means high style. And as much as the owners try, it's the dogs who really steal the show, Robertson said.

"You'll see dogs come in with peacock feathers and leopard collars, a lot of leather, but it's all diva-esque," Robertson said. "And the dude dogs, the hottie dogs, they come in with bow ties, tuxedos, cuffs around their ankles."

And it’s all for a good cause. Whether it’s those rhinestone collars or a feather boa, proceeds from all the sales Barkley Square makes during the ball will be donated to the Washington Humane Society.

Doggie Prada and helping out your local humane society -- sounds like a match made in pet heaven.
