Amish Market Finds New Home in Laurel

The Dutch Country Farmers Market, a weekend shopping destination in Burtonsville for two decades, has announced its new location and hours.

The market is run by 80 Amish and Mennonite workers who commute to the store by bus (driven by a non-Amish driver) each weekend from Lancaster County, Pa.  And if the men aren't wearing straw hats and suspenders, your first whoopie pie is free (not true, but they should give that promotion a try).

It closed last year after the developer of the shopping center they occupied at the intersection of Routes 29 and 198 made plans to demolish the existing stores and build a larger shopping complex in its place.

In an e-mail sent to a newsletter service (presumably that is also outsourced to one of us crazy, technology-embracing non-Amish types), the owners announced that the new location, which opens Sept. 10, is at 9701 Fort Meade Road in Laurel.

The regular hours will be 9 a.m.-6 p.m. on Thursdays, 9 a.m.-8 p.m. on Fridays, and 8 a.m.-3 p.m. on Saturdays.
