Amid the backlash following Spike Mendelsohn's "second-tier city" comment (hell hath no fury like a Washingtonian scorned), the Top Chef star will appear with cookbook author Joan Nathan at the National Archives to discuss Jewish holiday traditions and cooking in America.
The free event, which will take place May 25 at 7 P.M., is part of the Archive's celebration of Jewish American Heritage Month (who knew?) and will cover three centuries of Jewish food in America. Joining Mendelsohn and Nathan will be food writer Laura Shapiro. Following the talk, Nathan will sign copies of her latest book, Quiches, Kugels, and Couscous.
This isn't the first time that Mendelsohn has explored the culinary aspects of his Jewish roots. Earlier this year, he collaborated with Sixth & I Historic Synagogue to create the Sixth & Rye food truck, a completely kosher cart featuring items like smoked corned beef sandwiches, Israeli couscous salad, and black and white cookies.
Hopefully, Mendelsohn won't make any remarks about Jewish food being a second-tier cuisine. Then he'll really have something to worry about.
