Second-Half Surge Pushes GMU Past Mountaineers

George Mason beats Mount St. Mary's 72-60

FAIRFAX, Va. -- John Vaughan scored 18 of his 22 points in the second half as George Mason overcame a sluggish start to defeat Mount St. Mary's 72-60 on Tuesday night.

The Mountaineers (1-2) jumped out to an early 10-2 lead, and led for the majority of the first half behind 17 of Jeremy Goode's team-high 22 points. But the Patriots (4-1) countered with a 17-5 run to open the second half. The win was the seventh straight in a non-conference home game for the Patriots.

Mount St. Mary's, which drew to within 63-60 with 2:59 remaining before George Mason responded with a 9-0 run to end the game, shot just 6 of 17 from the free-throw line.

Ryan Pearson scored 14 points while Darryl Monroe and Louis Birdsong had 10 each for the Patriots.
