Scott MacFarlane is an investigative reporter for the News4 I-Team in Washington, D.C. His work has led to the creation of five state laws, triggered federal prosecutions and has been referenced in more than a dozen formal Congressional hearings.
MacFarlane is the recipient of several awards for his work on behalf of children’s safety. He won the Anna Quindlen Award for Excellence in Journalism from the Child Welfare League of America. His series of investigations on public schools has yielded several EMMY and Edward R. Murrow Awards. The Associated Press and SCAN child protection agency of northern Virginia have honored MacFarlane’s work reporting on school employee background checks.
His investigation of thoroughbred horse racing deaths in West Virginia inspired the passage of sweeping new state animal safety regulations and was honored with a Genesis Award for excellence in reporting from the Humane Society of the United States.
MacFarlane is also a Washington-based contributor to NBC NewsChannel, the network’s affiliate news service, and serves as a guest host on SIRIUS/XM’s POTUS channel.
MacFarlane joined NBC after a decade of work as a Capitol Hill reporter for the Cox Media Group. He began his career as a reporter for CBS TV affiliates in Detroit, Cleveland and Syracuse.
A long-time resident of the Washington, D.C. area, MacFarlane is a summa cum laude graduate of Syracuse University. It was there he met his wife Lisa, a former News4 producer. They have two sons, Jonathan and Sammy.
MacFarlane has also produced documentaries on the history of two New York radio stations, WJPZ-FM and WAER-FM. He belongs to the WJPZ and WAER radio Halls of Fame. He previously served on the Board of Advisors of Syracuse University’s Newhouse School of Public Communications.
