Road Closures Saturday for 50th Anniversary of March on Washington

Traffic in D.C. likely will be heavy Saturday due to the 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington, and the recommended mode of transportation to the events is public, but those who do drive in the area Saturday should be aware of some street closures.

The Arlington Memorial Bridge will be closed to vehicular traffic from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. Memorial Circle will remain open unless pedestrian safety becomes an issue. Use Route 110, the George Washington Memorial Parkway and public transportation to get to Arlington National Cemetery.

Message boards will be in place on Memorial Circle and the ramps from the GW Parkway to warn drivers of the bridge closure.

Traffic could get especially tough if trying to drive near the National Mall. Road closures will be in place Saturday along stretches of Independence and Constitution avenues.

Tour buses from all over the country are being directed to park at RFK stadium. Most passengers will then hop on the train.

For the Let Freedom Ring ceremony at the Lincoln Memorial from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. Aug. 28, D.C. police and U.S. Park Police will start road closures that morning.

  • Ramp from the SE/SW Freeway to Maine Avenue SW (No traffic to Maine Avenue)
  • Potomac River Parkway (No traffic south of E Street Expressway)
  • Potomac River Parkway ramp southbound
  • 12 and Maiden Lane SW (No traffic westbound to Maine Avenue)
  • Ramp from 9th Street Tunnel to Maine Avenue westbound

U.S. Park Police clousures:

  • Independence Avenue SW from 14th Street to 23rd Street
  • 15th Street from Constitution Avenue NW to Maine Avenue SW
  • 17th Street from Constitution Avenue to Independence Avenue SW
  • 23rd Street NW from Independence Avenue SW to Constitution Avenue NW
  • Arlington Memorial Bridge
  • Henry Bacon Drive from Lincoln circle to Constitution Ave NW

D.C. police will be making traffic closures to assist Park Police to shut down Independence Avenue and Ohio Drive at various times, starting at 2 a.m. The remaining post will be closed at 6:30 a.m.
