A rabid raccoon was captured and euthanized after attacking three people and two pets in the Chevy Chase neighborhood of Northwest D.C.
Animal control officers caught the raccoon Sunday afternoon after someone spotted it near Nebraska Avenue and 32nd Street. Hours earlier, it attacked three people, a cat and a dog.
The health department initially said the raccoon was captured Monday.
Tests performed Monday morning confirmed the raccoon was infected with rabies.
All of the people who were attacked are receiving treatment. The pets were given a booster vaccine and placed under confinement.
Rabies can be fatal for humans and animals if left untreated. Anyone who may have come in contact with a raccoon should contact the D.C. Health Department at 202-442-9143.
