Do you ever have those pre-MP3 player moments when you’re in the music section of your favorite store and see a CD and just decide to purchase? Well, I do.
A little more than a year ago I saw a CD for $7.99 — Jon McLaughlin’s major label debut — “Indiana,” and decided to buy it. I loved the album so much, I played it non-stop in my car for more than a month. I didn’t listen to anything else. To this day I put “Indiana” back into rotation on occasion.
So imagine my excitement when I heard McLaughlin was coming out with a new album after only a year. ‘Will it be as good?’ I wondered the past few months in nervous anticipation.
I’m happy to report that, yes, it’s awesome – and better! McLaughlin’s latest, “OK Now,” leads with the first single, “Beating My Heart” which is starting to gain more airplay on radio stations. ABC is also using the song in TV promos for their current hit shows. With an upbeat tempo and his passionate voice “Beating My Heart” makes you want to stand up and recite the lyrics directly into someone’s eyes. Truly.
But one song does not an album make, which McLaughlin knows. On “OK Now,” he shows the depth of his writing, vocal and instrumental talent. “You Can Never Go Back,” “Always On My Mind,” “Throw My Love Around” and “We All Need Saving” are other gems that make this album so grand. A full range of rock ‘n’ roll, ballads and reflection are found here.
“This album is about enjoying life as it happens,” he writes in the album notes. McLaughlin has succeeded with that intention and you’ll enjoy his success when you download “OK Now.”
