Madoff's Sons: Mom Knew

Bernie Madoff's sons felt they got burned too.

Andrew and Mark Madoff said their mother knew of their father's scamming ways and felt betrayed by the dad who "they were always trying to please but never could," according to a new piece in Vanity Fair.

A devastated Andrew, 42, had a mega-meltdown in his dad's posh East Side duplex, weeping on the floor of the apartment after his crook father fessed up to bilking investors out of $65 billion -- the last words the two would exchange, the magazine reported.

Mark fumed when his schemer dad confessed the crime to his sons on Dec. 10.

Though the brothers Madoff stand to lose their fortunes if a bankruptcy trustee goes after their assets, many have tired of the pair's excessive wallowing in self-pity.

"I'm unemployed, I don't have any money and I'm just trying to stay out of jail -- my name is mud," Andrew told an African-American friend, according to the New York Post.

"Well, now you're just like every black man in America," the friend replied.

Ashamed to be linked to his tarnished name, Andrew makes dinner reservations under his fiancee's moniker and his estranged wife, Deborah, orders groceries from FreshDirect using her maiden name, Vanity Fair reported.

Even the parents of classmates of Andrew's daughters at Dalton are concerned about letting their children go to parties at his house because they are "evidently fearful of assassins crouching in vestibules," according to the Post

The Madoff brothers have also refused to contact their mother, Ruth, and thought she was an enabler to the Ponzi plot that forever linked the family to the largest financial fraud in U.S. history, according to the magazine.

Bernie's secretary, Eleanor Squilleri, said she didn't think the sons were involved in the scheme.

"As horrible as Bernie was, he was so family-oriented," she told Vanity Far. "Those boys just woke up one day, and everything that was wasn't."

The Madoff brothers' annual earnings were as high as $5 million, the Daily News reported.

Bernie, 71, pleaded guilty in March to the massive rip-off and is jailed in lower Manhattan until his June 29 sentencing. He faces 150 year in prison.
