MSNBC Co-Host Mika Brzezinski on Kal Penn Mugging: “It Happens”

MSNBC's Mika Brzezinski, appearing at The Week's annual Opinion Awards last night, downplayed crime in the District on the heels of the early morning mugging of former White House staffer and well-known actor Kal Penn.

Brezezinski, who was mugged in two years ago in D.C., shared her opinions of the week's happenings at the swank W Hotel event with her "Morning Joe" co-host Joe Scarborough.

"I think Joe was even more upset about the mugging than me," Brzezinski said of the 2008 incident. "I gave the guy all I had on me -- $6 -- and it wasn't a big deal. ... I don't think Washington is a dangerous place despite what happened to [Kal Penn] this morning. It's a big city. It happens."

Ever the newshound she continued, "What was he doing walking by himself ... in the morning? You have to ask the real questions."

The event brings together political players and intellectuals for a reception honoring a selection of those who write about them.
