MLK Memorial Criticism

"The quote makes Dr. Martin Luther King look like an arrogant twit … He was anything but that. He was far too profound a man for that four-letter word to apply.

That's esteemed poet and author Maya Angelou's take on an inscription on the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial. Angelou says the quote on the statue, "I was a drum major for justice, peace and righteousness," is inaccurate, misleading, and should be changed. The inscription is a shortened, paraphrased quote from a 1968 speech, and joins the growing list of criticism surrounding the memorial.
