Police are searching for the person who stabbed another rider aboard a Green Line Metro train Friday afternoon and then ran from the station.

The victim, a man, was critically injured in the stabbing, which happened about 12:51 p.m. Friday aboard a camera-equipped train at Navy Yard bound toward Branch Avenue, authorities said.

A group of D.C. middle school students was in the car during the stabbing. Two were injured while trying to run away and checked by paramedics. The students were not seriously hurt, their teacher said.

The suspect ran out of the Navy Yard station, heading east out of the New Jersey Avenue exit and toward a CVS, police said.

Green Line trains were single-tracking and briefly bypassed Navy Yard, but the WMATA website indicated service has returned to normal.

Police released an image of a person of interest on Twitter, saying he has red hair and red pants, and may have cut himself during the incident. Anyone who sees him should call 911 and not take any other action, police warned.

Police said they believe the victim and the suspect knew each other and had a history of disputes. The victim was taken to a hospital, but may not survive, sources say.
