Metro says 42 stations will get thorough cleanings and new paint jobs over the next year and a half.

The work is part of Metro's $7.5 million station enhancement program, which began in 1991. Under the program, each station is restored about every four years.

The work is done in the middle of the night when the rail system is closed.

Besides cleaning and painting, the work includes installing or repairing signs, refinishing bus shelters and station platform benches and spot finishing bronze surfaces such as railings.

Even Sir Topham Hatt, famous for washdowns and paint jobs, would be proud.
