Baltimore 9/11 Memorial Taking Shape

The public will soon get its first glimpse of the new 9/11 memorial in Baltimore. Renderings of the project will be released in two weeks, organizers said.

The memorial is set to open in time for the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks, the Baltimore Sun reports. It's being built on the plaza north of Baltimore’s World Trade Center at the city’s Inner Harbor.

The focal point of the memorial will be a 22-foot-long artifact from the Twin Towers -- three twisted and torn steel beams, according to the recently launched project website. Wreckage from the Pentagon will also be incorporated into the structure.

Here’s a unique touch: The monument will also function as a sundial using the shadow of the building. Stones will feature the names and birthdates of the 63 victims of Sept. 11 who called Maryland home.

The display is scheduled to be completed this summer.  It will be dedicated on September 11, 2011.
