Last week's heat wave might be behind us, but we all know that the mercury is bound to skyrocket again this summer.

Sometimes, it's this familiarity with high temperatures that gets D.C. metro area residents in trouble. Instead of taking every precaution, we assume we're immune to the scorching weather, forgetting to hydrate or spending too much time outdoors.

However, no matter how accustomed you are to the heat, prolonged exposure to high temperatures can cause anything from dehydration and heat cramps to heat exhaustion and even deadly heat strokes.

Luckily, there are ways to fend off these heat induced maladies. Here are four pro tips that'll help you stay cool and healthy the next time the temperature gets unbearably hot.

Keep Water On Hand: Don’t leave home without a bottle of water and make sure to always have one in the car with you. A refillable bottle is best and most likely not to be left behind.

Reach For Fruit, Not Chips: Salty snacks can strip the body of its natural sodium and fluids. Instead of a bag of chips, have an orange, watermelon or other fruit with high juice content.

Minimize Exercise: When exercising or working outdoors, keep it short and make sure to take frequent rest and water breaks. Slacking on your fluid intake or over exerting yourself is a surefire way to wind up in the hospital.

It's Good To Be A Coach Potato: When air quality is poor and temperatures high, stay indoors and enjoy the A/C and TV.
