DC's summer weather can sometimes remind us of that "bad place" we might go after death. The humidity makes our hair all sorts of weird, we sweat uncontrollably on our daily commute (sorry, fellow Metro riders), and our stuck-to-the-seat legs cause both pain and an embarassing noise when we stand up.
These are just some of the many reasons why Rosa Mexicano's Festival de Helados could not have started at a better time. And thanks to second-grade Español, we are happy to inform you that "helados" is Spanish for "ice cream."
For three weeks, Rosa Mexicano (575 7th St. NW) will offer a special menu dedicated to both sweet and savory ice creams. Opt for a scoop of traditional peanut butter and Oaxacan chocolate, or a dip of the more unusual sweet potato and rum raisin ice cream.
The restaurant is also offering ice cream tacos, baked Alaska and a dessert version of guacamole, made from salted avocado and butter ice cream with fresh strawberries and white chocolate, and served with chocolate-dusted sweet tortilla chips.
For $8.50, you can sample three scoops of various ice creams, while the other desserts are reasonably priced at $9-12. The Festival de Helados runs from this Wednesday, June 24 through July 19, so you've got plenty of time to dip in and dig in.
