Age-Old Dilemma: Fuzzy Navel or Root Beer Float?

New cupcakery Occasionally Cake now open in Alexandria

We bet you thought that we had hit full cupcakery capacity in D.C. and Northern Virginia, didn't you? Well, you were wrong. So there.

Occasionally Cake is now open at 8859 Richmond Highway in Alexandria, with their official grand opening party from 6 to 9 p.m. tonight. Head on out for free samples, great company and a chance to get on the chef's good side for tasting privileges.

Despite the "occasionally" part of their name, we would like you to consider these cupcakes a necessary item in your life.

These newcomers wowed us with their selection of new, daily flavors like Lime in the Coconut, Chocolate-Covered Cherry, Root Beer Float, Fuzzy Navel and Poached Pear.

They'll even custom design flavors for customers who don't see the flavor concoction of their dreams on the menu. So if you've ever wanted a Twizzler or peanut butter-and-pickle cupcake, this is your chance.

The chefs also make custom party cakes in a big way. The personalized service includes a consultation with the chefs, who will help you nervous brides and party hosts out there make that dream cake a reality.

Plus, there's good news for those carb addicts who shy away from gluten: The spot makes gluten-free cupcakes and cakes to order. Just call to place your order and they'll whip up a batch just for you. One of the chefs has been baking for an allergic neighbor for years and knows her stuff.

Get the scoop on the daily flavors on their Facebook page and go by the bakery starting Thursday to enter their new flavor contest. If your flavor is picked, you will recieve a half dozen of your flavor the week they start baking it.

We wonder if they'd seriously consider our peanut butter-and-pickle combo, though.

Hours: Tue.-Sat. 10 a.m.-7 p.m.
