Free Eats During Govt. Shutdown

Need a bit of good news right now? Here you go: Z Burger will dish up free burgers daily to all federal workers in the event of a government shutdown.

“I know it will be tough on the federal workers not knowing if they will be getting paid,” said Peter Tabibian, founder and owner of Z Burger.

“If President Obama and House Speaker Boehner want to sit down here and hammer this thing out while eating our famous burgers, they are welcome to the same offer since they aren’t getting paid either.”

Anyone with a valid federal ID can get a free burger at the Tenleytown location (4321 Wisconsin Ave. N.W.), each day starting Monday, April 11.

The offer runs for as many days as the government is shutdown.

Radius Pizza (3155 Mount Pleasant St. N.W.) is offering a 10-percent discount to guests showing federal or D.C. work IDs or proof of federal contracting work. The offer begins Saturday, April 9, and can't be combined with other offers.

Pound Coffee (621 Pennsylvania Ave. S.E.) will have 25 percent off all food for government employees. They're calling it "Keep 'Em Fed."

Helix Lounge (1430 Rhode Island Ave. N.W.) is dishing up a PBR & Po'Boys Shutdown Special: a Southern-fried chicken po'boy with a side of wffle fries and truffle aioli dipping sauce, plus a can of Pabst Blue Ribbon for $9. Also, their happy hour is extending to run from 5 to 9 p.m. for the duration of the shutdown. Specials include $2 cans of PBR, $3 bottles of Yuengling, $4 single spirit cocktails (vodka, gin, tequila, bourbon), and $5 wines and cosmopolitans.

And Beanetics Coffee Roasters (7028 Columbia Pike, Annandale, Va.) says it's standing behind those of its loyal customers who have been deemed "nonessential" federal workers. "You are all essential to us," said co-owners Amy and David Starr in a press release.

The shop is offering free coffee refills to any customer with a federal ID for the duration of the shutdown.
