Fighting to Save Screen on the Green… Again

It almost bit the big one last year -- and its return for '10 is far from guaranteed

Screen on the Green narrowly avoided an untimely demise in 2009 -- but its reappearance this summer is anything but set in stone. The (Facebook) group headed by Jesse Rauch that saved it last year is getting in gear for another fight to bring the Monday night movie series back to the National Mall this summer.

Yes, kids, that historic event was the first time a Facebook group truly accomplished something. Now can they go two-for-two?

While we wait to find out, Rauch is asking fans to vote for Screen on the Green as Best Festival in CityPaper's annual Best of D.C. contest and join the Facebook group to stay informed.

Rauch tells us that HBO -- which has traditionally backed the movie event -- hasn't yet determined its 2010 budget. "Hence, our renewed effort to demonstrate how strongly the community supports and loves SOTG," Rauch told us in an e-mail today.

As the group's Facebook page points out, "Really, what would a summer be without the HBO dance, Looney Tunes cartoons, and then a lovely feature on the Mall, in the shadow of the Capitol?"

We couldn't have put it better ourselves. But then, we've been practicing the HBO dance allllll winter long, which is a problem in and of itself.
