Eradicating the City’s “Food Deserts”

Local Food, Local Chefs Raise Awareness

District Flavors

Local food and environmentalist groups, chefs and hungry Washingtonians gathered on 10/10/10 at District Flavors, a block party at Bread for the City (1525 7th St. N.W.). The event, funded by donations, will give extra funds raised to Bread for the City's green roof project.

The event, organized by Roadside Organics duo Nick Wiseman and Seth Teicher, was meant to raise awareness of so-called "food deserts," areas in economically challenged neighborhoods that lack access to fresh ingredients.

A free buffet of delectable offerings included creations from DC Coast's Brendan Cox, Kora's Marou Ouattara, 1789's Dan Giusti, Nathan Anda of Red Apron Butchery, and meat from Eco-Friendly Foods founder Bev Eggleston's Virginia farm. Sweetgreen's SweetFlow Mobile yogurt truck was also on the scene, doling out free samples.
