Eastern Market Still Hopes for June Reopening

Construction hours extended

In order to stay on schedule for a summer reopening, Eastern Market and the surrounding community will have to endure longer construction hours.

Starting Wednesday, working hours were extended from 3:30 p.m. to midnight Monday through Friday and 6 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturdays.

The reason: fixing the badly deteriorating floor in the South Hall.

A fire devastated the 135-year-old market in April 2007, and a temporary structure was built to house the merchants until the building could be renovated.

Officials said most of the construction will happen inside the building and that neighbors may hear small tractors backing up outside the building and dumping concrete.

The reconstruction is scheduled to be completed by June.
