Cocktails for Conservation is being billed as a "festive eco-benefit" at Helix Lounge (1430 Rhode Island Ave. N.W.). Mixologist Rico Wisner will serve up specially created drinks with a focus on local, organic, and sustainable spirits with seasonal ingredients. Snack on hors d’oeuvres and enter for a chance to win raffle prizes from Kimpton hotels, restaurants and their eco-friendly partners. Hotel Monaco Alexandria (480 King St., Alexandria) is hosting a pop-up art exhibit featuring more than a dozen regional artists and their works made entirely from recycled materials. 5-6 p.m.; free.

The National Zoo (3001 Connecticut Ave. N.W.) is throwing an Earth Day Party for the Planet. Turn newspaper into a plant pot and take home your own, meet the zoo's Green Team and bring your old electronics for recycling. You can also pick up some easy tips on leading a more environmentally friendly life. 10 a.m.-noon.; free.

The Butcher's Block Market (1600 King St., Alexandria) hosts an earth-friendly wine tasting featuring grape varietals such as Vinho Verde, Sauvignon Blanc, Rosé, Pinot Noir and Bordeaux blends. Learn about environmentally friendly farming, including organic and biodynamic methods. 6-8 p.m.; free.

SPECIAL RECYCLING OPPORTUNITIES:

Firefly Restaurant (1310 New Hampshire Ave. N.W.) has become an official cork recycling drop-off site for ReCork by Amorim. Bring your old wine corks so they can become shoes, flooring tiles, building insulation or automotive gaskets instead of heading to the landfill. The wine cork recycling bin is located in the vestibule of the restaurant. (Only real corks will be accepted; no plastic or metal.)

Republic Square (25 Massachusetts Ave. N.W.) is collecting electronic waste and used batteries through Friday, April 29 in the property management office (Suite C24). You can drop off the following items: phones, computers, servers, microwaves, keyboards, stereo equipment, cords and wires.
