Yard Sale of Sorts to Be Held at Va. General Assembly Building

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Shoppers will have the chance next week to scoop up furniture, electronics and other odds and ends from a soon-to-be-demolished state office building next to the Virginia Capitol.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports surplus items from the General Assembly Building will be available at a moving sale of sorts on July 11.

Doors will open at 9 a.m. for state agencies, local governments and schools districts to browse. The public can shop between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.

The building is a patchwork of four structures built between 1912 and 1965. Its asbestos problem was a main reason lawmakers decided to demolish it rather than renovate it.

Proceeds from the sale will go toward the preservation of Capitol Square and the buildings that surround it.
