Which Team Provides the Best Experience for DC Fans?

WASHINGTON — When it comes to the best fan experience in D.C., the Caps are champs according to a new survey by J.D. Power.

The study measured fan satisfaction with their overall experience among professional sports teams in each market. In D.C., the Caps score highest in security, seating and leaving the game. They were followed by the Wizards, the Nats, D.C. United and lastly, the Redskins.

“We know teams with winning records generally do not have problems filling seats, but this study is about finding out which teams are giving their fans the best experience for their dollar,” said Greg Truex, the senior director for Sports Research at J.D. Power. “The teams at the top of their markets understand what it takes to keep fans coming back for more as well as recommending the experience to friends and family, regardless of the standings.”

The survey also found that while Nationals Ballpark is the newest stadium in D.C., it doesn’t score very well in fan experience, trailing the Verizon Center and coming just barely ahead of the Nationals’ former home at RFK Stadium.

D.C. United’s struggles aren’t limited to the field either. They came in as the lowest-scoring MLS team across all the markets in the study. They ranked ahead of only the Redskins.

Fan satisfaction was evaluated across seven factors (in order of importance): seating area and game experience; security and ushers; leaving the game; arriving at the game; food and beverage; ticket purchase; and souvenirs and merchandise. Satisfaction was measured on a 1,000-point scale. Additional factors that are measured but not included in the official ranking are loyalty and future intentions; team performance (on-field); and team image.

The Capitals scored a total of 797 points, the Wizards had 787, the Nats had 764, D.C. United came in with 752 followed by the Redskins with 748.
