PORTSMOUTH, Va. (AP) — Police are investigating the death of a 60-year-old Virginia inmate who had asked for emergency medical help two days before he died.
Media outlets report that Henry Stewart filled out an emergency grievance form at the Hampton Roads Regional Jail on Aug. 4 saying he had blacked out twice in less than 24 hours and couldn’t hold down food or water. Stewart died two days later.
The form said a nurse determined his concerns “not to be an emergency.” It said Stewart had refused medication and had been evaluated by off-site specialists. Stewart’s family said they found the form among his belongings at the jail.
Portsmouth police say they’re investigating Stewart’s death.
Jail Superintendent David Simons didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment from The Associated Press Thursday.
