RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — A Virginia physician accused of being a key player in an oxycodone pill mill operation has been convicted on 19 drug-related charges.
The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports a federal jury returned the verdict Thursday against 62-year-old Clarence Scranage Jr. of King George.
He was found guilty of one count of conspiracy to possess controlled substances with the intent to distribute them and 18 counts of distribution of controlled substances.
Scranage ran a pain-management practice in the Richmond area and acted as his own attorney. Prosecutors alleged that over four years, he wrote hundreds of prescriptions for oxycodone pills, many times for people he had not examined in exchange for money.
Scranage was taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals Service. A sentencing hearing has been set for Nov. 17.
