Va. Offenders Transferred After Building Deemed Unsafe

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Authorities say dozens of offenders at a detention center in Capron have been moved to a new facility because of structural problems with the building.

The Department of Corrections says all 78 low-level offenders at the Southampton Men’s Detention Center were moved Friday to the Cold Springs Detention Center in Greenville.

An engineer said structural problems made the Southampton facility unsafe in high winds. The Cold Springs Work Center was closed last year due to budget cuts.

The offenders who were moved participate in a program that allows them to work in the community during the day.

Corrections Director Harold Clarke says no decision has been made on whether to fix the Southampton facility, which would likely cost more than $1 million.
