Va. Congressional, Arlington Primary Results 2016

WASHINGTON — Virginia voters in select parts of the state head to the polls Tuesday to weigh in on their party’s congressional nominees.

Democrats in Arlington will also choose a candidate for the County Board. Board Chair Libby Garvey faces a challenge from planning commission member Erik Gutshall.

But the attention Tuesday will be focused on Hampton Roads, where eight-term Congressman Randy Forbes is running in a new district and faces two opponents in the Republican primary.

Forbes’ district was redrawn after the federal courts found that Virginia lawmakers illegally packed black voters into the nearby 3rd District in order to make neighboring districts safer for Republican incumbents.

The changes and Forbes’ decision to not run for his old 4th District seat created an open seat that would represent an area stretching from eastern Henrico County to the North Carolina line. Four candidates are running for the chance to represent the new 4th District.

Northern Virginia’s four members of Congress faced no primary season challengers and will all advance to the fall ballot.

The polls close at 7 p.m.

All results are unofficial until certified by the State Board of Elections.
