CAMBRIDGE, Md. (AP) — The University System of Maryland’s governing board has voted to give Chancellor Robert Caret a $75,000 bonus and a $30,000 raise in a closed meeting.
The Baltimore Sun reports (http://bsun.md/1XYkZmX ) that system spokesman Mike Lurie says Caret’s base salary will rise to $630,000 and his contract allows for an annual bonus of up to 15 percent of his salary.
The Board of Regents voted at a meeting in Cambridge on Friday in a closed session and the vote was disclosed in response to media inquiries. Lurie says the vote fell under the “personnel matters” exception of the state’s Open Meetings Act.
Common Cause Maryland Executive Director Jennifer Bevan-Dangel says she can see keeping a performance evaluation closed, but the decision for a bonus should be public.
