WASHINGTON — With much national discussion about immigrants since President Donald Trump’s proposed immigration ban, the District did some math and concluded that 26 percent of the 829,000 jobs in D.C. are held by immigrant workers.
That’s almost 216,000 people.
Many of those jobs are low-paying occupations. The District Measured blog says 80 percent of carpenter jobs in D.C. are held by immigrants. Immigrants represent 70 percent of taxi drivers and 61 percent of cooks in D.C.
But immigrants also hold high-paying jobs in the District: 32 percent of physicians practicing in D.C. are immigrants and 46 percent of economists are immigrants as well.
District Measured notes that there are about 75,000 immigrants in low-wage jobs in D.C., and about 73,000 immigrants in high-wage jobs.
