RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Stone Brewing Co. is protesting the first local real estate assessment of its new brewery in Richmond.
The Richmond Times-Dispatch (http://goo.gl/1yUSx4 ) reports that the craft brewery has sent a letter of protest to the city’s assessor’s office.
Under the city’s current assessment, Stone would have to pay about $12.2 million in real estate taxes through 2040. The company wants that reduced to about $3.1 million.
Stone is one the biggest craft breweries in the country and the California-based company picked Richmond in 2014 to build its East Coast operations.
Gov. Terry McAuliffe has been active in luring craft breweries to Virginia. Oregon-based Deschutes Brewery and California-based Ballast Point Brewing and Spirits have also picked Virginia to be their East Coast homes.
