WASHINGTON — It’s the time of year for getaways, but summer is also peak season for home break-ins. A few steps can help keep your home secure while you’re on vacation.
It’s a good idea to make your home look inhabited. AAA Mid-Atlantic recommends using timers to turn lights on and off.
Also, arrange to have your mail stopped or picked up, and make sure newspapers don’t pile up. It’s a good idea to have a friend or neighbor check on things while you’re away, as well.
AAA advises that home alarms, are worthwhile and homeowners should check with their insurer for any possible discounts. Put valuables and expensive jewelry out of sight, and preferably locked up.
Disconnect home computers from the internet to thwart any attempt by hackers, and safeguard personal information.
A word to the wise about Facebook, Twitter and other social media: Vacation pictures are fun and irresistible, but posting vacation pictures while you’re still away lets the world know that your house is empty.
