Staunton Father Indicted in Beating Death of 6-year-old Son

STAUNTON, Va. (AP) — A Staunton man has been indicted on charges in the beating death of his 6-year-old son.

Local news outlets report that a grand jury indicted 25-year-old Steven Decker on Monday on charges of second-degree murder and child abuse in Ezra Decker’s death.

Prosecutors say Ezra Decker died of his injuries Feb. 3, just days after being taken to Augusta Health, with head trauma and bruising. He was then transferred to the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville, where he died.

A doctor testified that Steven Decker said his son fell while taking a shower at their home, striking his head. However, the doctor said the boy’s injuries were not consistent with the suspect’s story.
