NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — A Norfolk sailor alleges he was mistreated at work because of his wife’s advocacy in the Flint, Michigan, crisis over lead-contaminated water and because the couple raised questions about lead detected in their off-base military housing.
The Virginian-Pilot reports (http://bit.ly/2gZbil1 ) Petty Officer 1st Class Dennis Walters, who used to live in Flint, filed complaints in November with the Department of Defense, the Navy and U.S. Rep. Scott Rigell’s office.
Walters says he was forced to work excessive hours and was threatened with psychiatric evaluations and discharge. He requested a transfer to another unit.
A Norfolk Naval Station spokeswoman says the Navy is investigating his complaints.
The director of water and wastewater compliance for the Navy Mid-Atlantic Region says Walters’ community was tested this year and found to be within the limits for lead.
