WASHINGTON — About a year after Safeway and ExxonMobil ended their gas-rewards partnership, Safeway is partnering with Sunoco and expanding its program to the mid-Atlantic, including the Washington area.
Safeway customers can now earn gas-rewards points, good for up to 20 cents off per gallon depending on their grocery bills, at area Sunoco stations.
Since the ExxonMobil deal ended, Safeway Club Card customers could only earn points redeemable at Safeway stores that also sell gas. There are only about a half-dozen of those stores around D.C.
About 200 Sunoco stations and 120 Safeway stores in Virginia, Maryland, D.C. and Delaware offer the new program.
Safeway’s Sunoco partnership competes with a similar gas-rewards program Giant Food has in partnership with Shell gas stations.
Safeway ended its ExxonMobil partnership last summer after 2 1/2 years, calling the decision mutual.
