Richmond Schools in the Running for $10 Million Prize

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Richmond Public Schools has its eye on a $10 million prize.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports (http://bit.ly/1Uf9dDo ) that the school district is one of nearly 350 semifinalists for the multi-million award from XQ: The Super School Project.

XQ is the brainchild of Laurene Powell Jobs, the widow of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs. It’s challenging schools to come up with new ways to teach high school students.

Richmond says it would use the money to create the Richmond Academy for Innovative STEAM Education. The academy would be focused on project-based learning in science, technology, engineering, arts and math.

XQ is expected to announce the winners in August. As many as five semifinalists could be chosen.
