WASHINGTON — Monday morning was a little tougher to take for some residents of Montgomery Village when they were forced to start the day by assessing damage to their parked cars.
Police said three teenage boys — two 15-year-olds and a 14-year-old — smashed windshields, rear and side windows and dented doors and hoods.
The vandalism occurred in the area of Christopher Avenue and Leatherfern Terrace, not far from the Gaithersburg Library.
“The latest count we have — we have 36 cars that were vandalized,” said Montgomery County Police Officer Rick Goodale.
“The initial reports were that they were using a combination of a baseball bat, possibly a fire extinguisher,” he said.
Neighbors who could hear the smashing glass telephoned police shortly after 1 a.m. Monday.
Police said they caught the kids around two hours later. They’ve been charged with destruction of property.
“Certainly one thing the officers will be looking at is what role the parents may have had. Did the parents know the kids were out that early?” he said.
According to Goodale, auto insurance companies could try to press the teenagers’ families to pay for the damage.
