Police: Man Shot Near DC's Verizon Center

WASHINGTON (AP) — Police in Washington, D.C., say a man was shot near the Verizon Center.

Spokeswoman Rachel Schaerr said officers responding to a call about noon Friday found a man suffering from a wound to an “upper extremity.” She didn’t elaborate, but The Washington Post cited police as saying he’d been shot in the face. Schaerr says the man is conscious and breathing. She doesn’t have any additional information about him or a suspect.

D.C. Fire and EMS spokesman Doug Buchanan says crews brought a man from a McDonald’s outside the arena to a hospital. Police spokeswoman Karimah Bilal says the restaurant was evacuated, but Schaerr says it’s not clear if he was shot there.

The Verizon Center is home to the NBA Wizards and NHL Capitals. No events were scheduled Friday.
