Police Investigating Whether Cruiser Struck Boy on Bike

WASHINGTON, D.C. (AP) — Police in the nation’s capital are investigating whether a police cruiser struck an 11-year-old bicyclist and drove away.

The Washington Post reports that police investigators are sorting through conflicting accounts about Thursday night’s incident. The boy’s mother said he told her the cruiser struck his bike and left.

The boy’s mother said the officers were interested in the fireworks hanging out of his pocket. Some are illegal in the city. The boy told his mother that the cruiser struck the back of his bicycle before an officer checked the fireworks and handed them back. He said the cruiser then drove off.

Portreona M. Brown, the boy’s mother, said her son still has a limp from the incident.

Police spokesman Dustin Sternbeck said police are “looking into whether procedures were followed.”
