PRINCE EDWARD, Va. (AP) — Authorities say the pilot of a small airplane suffered serious injuries when he crash-landed in a field in central Virginia.
The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports the Piper PA-15 ran out of fuel and the pilot was forced to make a crash landing around 1:05 p.m. Monday in Prince Edward County southwest of Richmond. The impact of the crash caused the aircraft to catch fire.
According to the newspaper, the pilot was flying from North Carolina to Connecticut at the time of the crash and was the only one on board. He was flown to VCU Medical Center in Richmond for treatment of serious but non-life-threatening injuries. State police initially described his injuries as minor.
Police said the Federal Aviation Association and the National Transportation Safety Board were notified of the crash.
