BALTIMORE (AP) — Fire officials in Maryland are investigating two fire hydrants that didn’t work during a blaze that damaged ten rowhouses and forced about two dozen people from their homes.
Baltimore Fire Chief Niles Ford says the two hydrants that malfunctioned during the fire were recently checked. The Baltimore Sun reports one hydrant was checked nine days before the fire, while the other one was checked 44 days prior.
Ford says hydrants are checked every six months and the faulty hydrants were fixed by Baltimore’s Department of Public Works during the fire.
More than 80 firefighters battled the blaze Monday afternoon that spread rapidly through rowhouses. The fire drove 23 residents from their homes. Two people were injured, including a firefighter.
Officials say the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
