No Expulsion for 7-year-old Who Brought Toy Guns to School

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (AP) — A 7-year-old Portsmouth student will not be expelled for bringing toy guns to school.

The second-grader was suspended for 10 days in May after he was caught with a water gun and a Nerf gun in class at Douglass Park Elementary. Following his suspension, the school told the child’s mother that he could be expelled.

WAVY-TV reports (http://bit.ly/1XtdgMO) the Portsmouth school board met Thursday to take up the issue, during which the superintendent withdrew his recommendation of expulsion for the student.

While the Portsmouth school system has a zero tolerance policy for guns in schools, the child’s mother thought this case was different because she said her son didn’t understand what he was doing and why he couldn’t bring his toy guns to school.
